About
Reginald's Biography
Academics have always been important part of my life. Ever since I remember, I have always enjoyed
school. When I graduated high school, I planned on moving to California for college, but I remained in Massachusetts and studied at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I graduated with a degree in English and a minor in Sociology. Throughout my undergraduate experience, I held titles such as Resident Assistant, where I managed thirty residents on a floor of a twenty-two story dorm. Also, I served as a University Tour Guide and as a Student Admissions Representative. Working with prospective students was a delight, and it will always be a field I plan to return to.
Thankfully, my experience as a Student Admissions Representative prepared me for my calling as an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admission at Emerson College in the heart of Boston. In this position, as an Assistant Director, I met many students with the interest of studying Communication and the Arts. I recruited in the southeast part of the United States. Also, I participated in college fairs and most importantly, made admission decisions when evaluating an applicant’s file. I had the opportunity to become a member of two professional organizations, New England Association for College Admission Counseling (NEACAC) and National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). These organizations prepare individuals for careers in Admissions by providing professional development workshops and enhancing one’s career.
After living in Massachusetts my entire life, and having almost two years in this position, I decided it was time to leave Massachusetts, and venture off toward something new. Two days after Christmas, I packed up my jeep, and headed to Arizona!
I had positions outside the educational arena in Arizona and was truly unhappy. I knew sooner or later I would return to the field of higher education. In the beginning of 2007, I started to search for positions within higher education.
A few months later, I applied to a position at Arizona State University and stepped into the role as a Student Recruitment/Retention Specialist, Senior. I am an Accountancy Advisor for the School of Global Management and Leadership. I absolutely love my position! I am responsible for working with the freshman population, creating programs, and recruitment. Currently, I serve as SGML’s Coach for the Academic Bowl. Working with my students and preparing them for the Bowl has been very fulfilling.
After being in different elements within higher education and having strong passion for this field, I believed returning back to school was a great choice. I find it interesting wearing many hats: academic counselor, counselor, recruiter, and now, a graduate student. As I complete my first class as a graduate student this week, I am excited to learn more about this field! Someday, I plan to return to my former life in Admissions.
